call for volunteers




The Chicago Journal of Visual Art is seeking a Copyright Coordinator and a Copyeditor as we expand our operations and prepare for the release of future issues. This is an opportunity geared towards young professionals eager to contribute to an emerging academic journal of art history and criticism. The positions are volunteer based and are subject to compensation.

Copyright Coordinator


The Copyright Coordinator acts as a liaison between the journal’s editorial team, its contributors, and image right holders to ensure proper clearance and documentation of copyrighted materials.

Key Responsibilities
- Conducting research on images and their sources
- Contacting image right holders and securing rights for publication
- Liaisoning between the editorial team, the contributors, and the image right holders

Skills & Requirements
- Proficiency with image research and copyright laws
- Excellent communication and language skills
- Experience in publication (magazines, journals) preferred


Copyeditor

The Copyeditor works with text to ensure that grammar, syntax and punctuation are used correctly and style guides are followed by proofreading and formatting content.

Key Responsibilities
- Correcting grammar, punctuation and spelling mistakes, alongside checking for factual errors
- Ensuring that texts comply with the applicable style guide
- Making minor changes to improve text readability and flow


Skills & Requirements
- Excellent attention to detail and error spotting
- Fluency in Chicago Manual of Style (Chicago 18th Ed.)
- Experience in publication (magazines, journals) preferred

ISSUE I RELEASE party

The release of Issue I of the Chicago Journal of Visual Art occured on September 25, 2026 at Point Blank from 6-9pm alongside our symposium New Modes: Imagining emerging scholarship in the Twenty-First Century hosted by Jake Leech.

Featuring Jonah Sanderson, Matthew Cortez, and Jasmine Johnson, the contributors of Issue I discussed the ways in which they interpret and pursue scholarship in a time of institutional uncertainty for emerging scholarship.
